Kassab Women's Center in North Darfur

From 2007 through 2011,  Susan Burgess-Lent, then Program Director of Darfur Peace and Development Organization (DPDO), worked with displaced women in North Darfur to create a successful Women's Center in Kassab camp.  This Center was the genesis of the Women's Center model.

Kassab Women's Center continues to operate under the sponsorship of UNFPA and has spun off a second center in nearby fata Borno camp.  Susan maintains contact with the original staff members. The main building of Kassab Center (pictured above) has been decorated with canvas pieces from the Tents of Hope event in Washington, DC in 2009. The container filled with tents and clothing took about three years to make it to Kassab.

Darfur continue to be highly insecure, with unpredictable outbreaks of violence. Rape is epidemic in the region. The Khartoum government has made it increasing difficult for humanitarian assistance to be delivered in Darfur.

As conditions allow, WCI may return to Kassab to help complete the Center's push to self-sustainability. Additional Women's Centers would be enormously helpful to thousands of Darfuri women still displaced from their homes during 11 years of conflict.
